What is an App or Mobile application?
Apps are programs that run on smartphones, ipads, iphones and android devices. An app can be anything from a game to an in-house corporate system.

An App Stores serve as digital distribution platforms that provide mobile software to mobile devices.
Market Share
At present Apple’s iOS App Store has over 350,000 apps available for download and accounts for over 80 percent of the total revenue across all platforms. It generated over $1.7 billion in 2010 according to technology research firm IHS.
For comparison, the Android Market Place contains 100,000 apps and generated $102 Million in total revenues in 2010, but android devices are now beginning to out do the Apple platforms.
The App Stores for BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 continue to grow rapidly too.
How are Apps different to Websites?
Apps, unlike mobile websites can interact with hardware in the smart devices. In many cases that means apps can take advantage of technologies like light sensors, motion sensors, GPS, sound for a much richer and interactive experience than you’d get on a PC.
Whats that mean for your business?
You can now interact with your clients/customers on a more personal level.
For example: You are a accountant and you wish to remind all your clients when its time to put there particular tax information in to you to process. You could send them all a reminder at one time. You could also have hints and tips on how to fill out paperwork etc, which in the long run will save you time because your clients are more informed on how to process information to you.
Another example: A local restaurant can notify there patrons that they have specials, that there are certain functions on or just to have reminders of what is coming up on the calender year, so they can book early. What about having you regular menu on your app with your phone number so they can ring for takeaway or to make a booking.
